With warmer days just around the corner, I thought what better time to talk about SPF! Not a sexy topic but one you wished you had taken more interest in when you were younger right?! But it’s not too late to make a change and learn a little something too!
UVA = Ageing – Ultraviolet A radiation makes up 95% of sunlight
UVB = Burning – Ultraviolet B radiation makes up the final 5%.
SPF
SPF – Sun protection factor- the grade 6+ through to 50+ refers to the amount of protection a product provides against just the UVB rays only.
The UVA star rating on the bottles between 0-5 star refers to the protection against UVB rays.
A mix of the two protections is what we call broad spectrum. The UK has set standards and we require these two ratings on bottles, when you buy your sunscreen abroad look out for these as some only provide one or the other!
All year-round protection
The sun is the cause of 90% of our skins ageing. Living in England, we have the majority of the UVB blocked by clouds and glass windows, but these don’t block the UVA! Remember A = Ageing. That’s why we all have a bit of pigmentation and is the reason why we need to be using an SPF on a daily basis all year round and not just when we’re drinking Pimm’s on the beach!
Tanning
As the UVB rays penetrate our skin, they trigger the melanosome cells which release the brown pigment- melanin, into the skin. Some people have very little melanin naturally will not tan and will usually always burn and people with black or Asian skin types don’t need the suns influence to produce melanin and have more natural sun protection as a result. Melanin being released is the body’s natural defence to absorb the suns UV radiation.
In my clinic I use Alumier MD’s physical sunscreens.
They provide safe, clean science that will not make you break out or leave you with a white or chalky complexion. AlumierMD spent many years developing their range of chemical free, zinc based sunscreens which glide onto the skin beautifully, dry easily and protect you effectively, every day. You just have to choose whether you want tinted or not!

PRACTIONER
You need to get to know them. Have they got qualifications that state they can do the treatment? And do they have the right medical support if something goes wrong?
It’s scary to think that these “horror’ stories and botched jobs by untrained and uncertified practioners – of which some “claim they are a medical practioner” could have been avoided if the right questions had been asked.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Remember these dermal filler and toxin injections are a medical procedure despite being one associated with the beauty industry and should be done by a medical practioner in case anything should go wrong.
CONSULTATION IS KEY
You should be offered a consultation prior to having a treatment. You should not feel rushed, be long enough for you to ask all your questions, you should feel confident and really reassured. Remember, you don’t have to have a treatment the same day and don’t be pressurised into something that doesn’t sit right with you.
AFTERCARE
This is what makes me me! As a nurse I have an ultimate duty of care to you, you are not my customer – you are my patient. I’m here to support you pre-treatment, and post – even years later if needed.
